“Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services […]”
Article 25.1, Universal Declaration of Human Rights
WHAT DO WE DO?
Dignified housing is a basic necessity that provides a secure base from which to develop a future.
For young refugee men in Greece, providing a safe place to live can also help them to break the vicious cycles created by the long term institutionalisation of camp life.
Housing provision and help with rental contracts and commitment are two of our working objectives.
Apartment rental assistance
For those who already possess a certain level of economic stability, the process of finding an apartment in Athens and the legal and administrative processes are very complicated.
We can provide information and guidance on where to look and online search, rental contracts and other amenities.
HOW DO WE DO IT?
Providing dignified housing
In the future, we hope to offer accommodation on a large scale. We plan to rent an apartment building, being able to cover both rent and bills for all the residents who live there.
This housing project will provide a stable and secure base for all its residents, from which they can grow and develop, until they are in a place in which they can rent their own apartment.
This program requires a large contribution on the part of donors and a great deal of financing: due to this we are developing a pilot project, thanks to which we will be able to evaluate the general performance and results and make the necessary changes before moving to a larger scale.
For this pilot project, we will rent one apartment, in which a maximum of two people per room will live. This limit is very important if we want to provide dignified housing, and avoiding the same conditions in which most of them have lived until this time.
According to our approach, by providing housing and adequate support in other fields, these young men will be able to move forward and achieve both personal and financial independence.
If the participant already has the means, the most suitable type of housing will be analysed and assistance will be provided throughout the search and rental process.
